Although laying on the beach with a coconut cocktail in one hand and a great book in the other is the idea of a perfect holiday for many people, some prefer adventure sport holidays. These travelers like to try new and challenging sports and activities, seeking thrills through outdoor adventure. If you are one of those people, you will need to look into a sports travel insurance policy, in order to protect yourself and your family from a financial burden.

What do I need?

Although a standard adventure and sports travel insurance will cover some activities, such as easy trekking, camping and modest sports, high-risk activities, including scuba diving, climbing and jet skiing may require a more extensive plan. Moreover, the activities and sports can only be covered to certain limits, for example scuba diving no deeper than 25 meters, hiking at less than 2,000 meters and skiing only on marked paths. Some policies can even state that you need to be accompanied by a qualified instructor in any of these cases. Before you purchase a sports travel insurance, make sure you read the small print to see it it covers all your needs.

High risk sports insurance

Adventure and sports travel insurance is only offered by experienced insurers and usually costs more than a regular travel insurance. However, if you think about the thousands of dollars spent on medical expenses, medical evacuation and reparation, the premium will seem like a small sacrifice. The price is also influenced by the activities and sports you plan to do. Even with specialized insurers, they fall into different categories of risk. For example, potholing, shark cage diving, white water rafting and wingsuit flying might be considered riskyer than abseiling, rock climbing and bungee jumping. The more dangerous the sport, the higher the premium you will have to pay.

Winter Sports Travel Insurance

If you are planing to go snowboarding, skiing or sledging, you will need a winter sports travel insurance. A regular insurance policy will not allow a claim if you are injured while practicing a winter sport, due to the fact that it is a common exclusion. Being transported from the side of a mountain by helicopter to the nearest hospital is not cheap and without proper coverage you will be held financially liable. It is also wise to insure expensive equipment in case it gets lost or stolen.

Backpackers insurance

Backpackers or students on a gap year backpacking trip for an extended period of time require an international backpackers insurance, as they will be moving from one country to the next. The insurance providers will generate a premium according to your age, health status and travel period. Make sure you inform them about any existing medical condition, all the location you will visit and the activities you plan to do.
